I travelled back to the exact second I stepped into the display room and found myself enrobed in the faint scent of roses, soothing like a salve and very familiar like the rose garlands children play with at weddings; but also reminiscent of the incredibly sophisticated scent of my mother’s perfume as she put me to bed by 9 pm every night.

My father’s grandmother played a huge part in my upbringing and after my great-grandfather passed away, I shared a room with her until I was 6. After my mother put me to bed, my great-grandmother would initiate our nightly ritual- make herself a cup of rosebud tea before settling next to me and telling me beautiful stories from the past. I vividly remember the subtle yet lingering aroma of the rose perfume and stories gently lulling me to sleep.

I don’t remember what my great-grandmother’s Rose tea looked like but I like to imagine it would have looked like this.

Last year, I added her tea ritual to my bedtime routine as a way of honouring my great-grandmother and also to ground myself before bed. This simple act of brewing a small cup of tea makes me feel closer to her and generates incredible gratitude for her presence in my life and the warmth that she exuded .
